The next subject is a difficult issue to adress as there are many misconceptions around this and because it is easy to fall into a polytheistic trap.
This post will be about how the pagan gods fit the Bibles narrative. (or vice versa)
The general storyline and framework and terminology
A common misconception is that the Bible denies the existence of other deities. We see this in the 10 commandment
This already indicates that others exists, we just should have God above them all.
So what does it really say?
God is the sole Creator. From him everything else came, including the angels (which became the pagan gods as I go into that). In Psalm 82 we hear
God presides in the divine assembly; He renders judgment among the gods: 2“How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? 3Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; uphold the rights of the afflicted and oppressed. 4Rescue the weak and needy; save them from the hand of the wicked.
[...]6I have said, ‘You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High.’ 7But like mortals you will die, and like rulers you will fall.” 8Arise, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are Your inheritance
God appointed the gods to rule and judge the nations, but they turned wicked, became unjust and thus kindled the wrath of God.
Here we find the first issue regarding the terminology. Specifically the term Elohim.
Elohim, being the plural of Eloah, seems to be a term to refer to any kind of spirit, from the spirit of the dead, to the angels, demons, and God himself, denoting a form of power and might in the process
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elyon
ʾĒl ʿElyōn is usually rendered in English as "God Most High"
Meaning that either El or Elyon is most high, and El is likely high and elyon "most high" or "highest"
Now God is refered to in various ways. One is "Elyon", "most high", another is Ha-Elohim, THE God/Elohim, or at times simply Elohim using the plural in a singular way (though its then often with the identifier YHWH Elohim). Looking at Psalm 82 again it says
Elohim presides in the divine assembly; He renders judgment among the Elohim:
Showing here both forms of Elohim being used, "God" and "gods". This is similar to the Royal We
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_we
Now the gods/angels were appointed over the land, and they started worshiping those eventually. At some point one of the deities reigned over the others and the title turned into a name refering to a single one which is where we got "El" from as a name for a deity.
I believe a similar route in a different language/culture happened to the term "Baal". Originaly it was a term to mean "Lord". The rulers, as Psalm 82 tells us were the Elohim, being their lords. Eventually one took hold over the others and became the sole ruler, lord, Baal and the title became the name.
The same goes for the term Melech
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melech_(name)
You need to know that ancient hebrew did not have vowels. As such Melech, the term for Angel, was MLCH, which is also the same for the deity "Moloch". Seemingly the same route has the term Melek, King, being MLK like Molek (as Moloch is also called) giving the connection between the term for angels/god and rulers which turned into a name eventually.
All this I believe substantiates the claim of Psalm 82 refering to God appointing the gods over the people.
Beyond that, regarding the terminology I would add that El is somewhat used as a title in the names of the angels, MichaEL, GabriEL, RaphaEL etc.
Going by contemporary myths and comparing them to the Bible it appears as if Satan was once the head of the divine assembly and the one leading the charges against mankind, but eventually his wickedness caused him to condemn all of mankind through his envy and this caused the rebellion. We see this as Saturn/Chronus ruling in the golden age, Osiris the egyptian version or in arabic myth the leader and first of the angels turning to rebellion over his envy towards humans (I will go into why I identify Satan with Saturn etc. further below)
Another thing Psalm 82 mentions is
https://biblehub.com/interlinear/psalms/82-6.htm
6I have said, ‘You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High.’
The gods being the sons of God, the sons of Elyon. This gets us to Genesis 6 which tells us
1Now when men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, 2the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took as wives whomever they chose.
The sons of Ha-Elohim came to our world, took our daughters and created offspring with them, which bore the Nephilim
4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and afterward as well—when the sons of God had relations with the daughters of men. And they bore them children who became the mighty men of old, men of renown.
Mighty man of renown, rulers. This is exactly what various stories around the world tell us, often the claim for the throne being justified through the descend from the gods.
Now many claim that this story means that the sons of God would be the sons of Adam who took other people as wives, however it specifically says the sons of Ha-Elohim took the daughters of Ha-Adam.
Further, when looking at the surrounding myths we have the Anunnaki.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anunnaki
Anunaki meaning "the offspring of Anu", where as Anu is the sumerian creator deity and representative of Heaven. So like the sons of the most high we have here the off spring of heaven.
Beyond that we see this story mirrored in the Eden story. In Genesis 3 we hear how the serpent tempts Eve, and while there are various layers to this the most obvious is the sexual layer, that Eve (and Adam possibly too) had sex with the serpent and that this procuded Cain.
The various hints are
-being naked and covering themselves up
-the seed of the serpent being cursed to be in opposition to that of the woman
-the woman being cursed to give birth in great pain
-trees being commonly symbolic of lineages and fruit being the offspring
Another hint is that "Seraph", the class of angels means
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seraph
A seraph (/ˈsɛrəf/, "the burning one"/"serpent";
A serpent as a class of angels mirroring the story in Genesis 6 and Enoch (of the angels fornicating with human women)
Also the Aramaic Targum states
https://www.sefaria.org/Targum_Jonathan_on_Genesis.4?lang=bi
>And
Adam knew Hava his wife, who had desired the Angel; and she conceived,
and bare Kain; and she said, I have acquired a man, the Angel of the
Lord.
This text also goes into this
http://theopenscroll.com/cainsPaternity.htm
Further evidence that the serpent isnt just a serpent is that the word for "serpent" is "nachash"
https://biblehub.com/hebrew/5175.htm
which is the same word and thus probably a pun for "enchanter" or "wizard",
https://biblehub.com/hebrew/5172.htm
its also to money lender (This being a great text on this interpretation)
https://biblehub.com/hebrew/5377.htm
or to deceive
https://biblehub.com/hebrew/5378.htm
So here again deceiver/serpent/angel/wizard seduced a woman and from this seemingly a wicked child, Cain was born as the nephilim increased the wickedness on earth.
Additionally, though its not considered canon, the book of Enoch mirrors this narrative of Genesis perfectly. It tells us how the angels came to earth to take our woman, made children with them and taught us all kinds of things, from astrology to magic (the "wizard" in the translation), dividing of roots (brewing potions and probably drugs), metal smithing for war, where as Cains descendent, Tubal-Cain is described as forefathers of the workers of metals
22And Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain, a forger of every implement of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
Identification
So what is left is to try and identify some of the angels with the deities. This is difficult because generally we see that the Bible often explains how God sent an angel to do some work and this being treated as doing it himself, the angel turning into an extension of God. Exodus 14 for example tells us that an angel of God went in front of the Israel on their way out of Egypt
19And the angelc of God, who had gone before the camp of Israel, withdrew and went behind them.
At other points its God himself is said to have walked in front of Israel.
21And the LORD went before them in a pillar of cloud to guide their way by day, and in a pillar of fire to give them light by night, so that they could travel by day or night.
The reason is that when God sends us someone, wether an angel, or prophet, or his son its no different than him doing it himself. God sends us aid in whatever form, and no matter how its still Gods work. However this doesn not mean we should worship the prophet, or angel as God. This is something Kabballists seem to engage, they deem the various angels and spirits to be a manifestation of a part of God, and thus can be worshipped as him, though this is another subject.
I think it is worthy of note here too that the pagan myths of how different deities are embodiments of forces of nature and then together formed the world we live in dont contradict the biblical account where God creating those forces/gods/angels/elohim which then formed the world just skips the mechanism God used to create. This possibly is even told in Genesis 1.
26Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itselfd and every creature that crawls upon it.”
Here it says "Elohim 'said let us make Adam'", though supposedly (Im not familliar with Hebrew so I have to rely on others oppinions and reasoning here) the rest of the sentence is formed hinting towards the majestic plural it could be interpreted as the gods creating man and the rest of the world due to the lack of identifier. Or maybe this lack of identifier even is a hint of God working through other being he created as before.
Genesis 2 then goes into how YHWH Elohim, the specific one, God most high, created "Ha-Adam", THE Man.
I
usually took it as Genesis 1 being just general creation with humans
being mentioned in passing where Genesis 2 goes into the story of man in
more detail though, but this interpretation fits really well otherwise and is I believe worth a consideration.
However despite this we can get a few fits on the who is who.
Michael
The easiest here is Michael which seems a clear fit for Jupiterian storm deitys
Michael is the one who threw Satan (Saturn, will get to that) down to earth as Zeus defeated Cronus.
The way Satan falls here is
>18So He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
Michael threw Satan (Saturn) down to earth with lightning.
So Zeus (Jupiter) defeated Cronus (Saturn) while also having lightning/storm powers
Thor (Jupiter) locked away Loki (While fairly antagonistic I couldnt identify him as a planet) and fought with the evil serpent Jormungandr.
In all occasions its Jupiter is BTFOing Saturn (or in the nordic one at least an antagonist) with lightning
Also
Baal (seemingly a mix of Baal Hadad, Jupiter, and Baal Hammon, Saturn)
is known to have slayn an evil serpent and in general had enmity with
snakes, Thor is the archenemy of Jörmungard, the worldserpent of loki
that grew big enough to reach around the world biting its own tail
making it a symbol for the world, but also being ouroboros which is a
symbol of time that devours everything fitting back to chronus.
Michael threw satan down to earth, the serpent in garden eden.
Zeus killed Typhon a serpentlike monster that tried to take his throne of the cosmos.
The hindu Indra, Jupitarian deity, killed an evil Serpent while having lightning bolts as a power.
There
is also in Egypt Set, the god of storms (again a link to the jupitarian
deities with stoms and lightningbolts) that defeated Osiris, the god of
the underworld being a link to death and of fertillity of the field like Chronus is, and
he also constantly thought the evil serpent Apep/Apophis
In the Sumerian myth we get Enki, a bringer of knowledge who rebelled against Anu the creator and was fought by the storm deity Enlil who remained loyal to Anu.
People try to connect Jesus to Jupiter bu there are only 2 connections I found between them. First is the septemberprophecy
The prophecy states a child is born and is continued to be described like Jesus is usually, when it was virgo, the virgin, birthed Jupiter in the manner the prophecy told, and Jesus is all about rejection of the flesh, of the material and embracing the spirit which gives somewhat a connection to the lightning as its the very force creating the conciousness in your brain (neural impulses animating your whole body even)
Also "Jupiter" comes from a word meaning as much as "Sky Father" as the heavenly Father which is God, but the names of Angels all link back to God, so I can see this just being the case in foreign languages and pantheons as well.
People bring up that Jesus name in greek, Iesous supposedly means "Hail Zeus", but this doesnt hold up as his name isnt Iesous but Yahushua (meaning "Yah[Weh] saves"). There is the theory that the greeks transliterated his name in such a manner to mock christians by having them hail another deity each time they refer to the saviour.
Jupiter fits Michael way better
Satan
The next clear fit is the serpent/satan
The serpent in Eden is identified as Satan
2He seized the dragon, the ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.
Revelation describes Michael defeating Satan and throwing him to earth. Earlier Satans fall is described as already mentioned
18So He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
We can say from this that the serpent is satan is the dragon is a fallen angel.
Lucifer tempts knowledge, the serpent did exactly this, so we can assume that Lucifer is Satan as well.
The
aztecs have Quetzacoatl, the feathered serpent that brought them
knowledge, like the serpent in Eden, and he is identified as the planet
Venus which is Lucifer when appearing as morningstar
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucifer
>Lucifer
(/ˈljuːsJfər/ LEW-si-fər) is a name that, according to dictionaries of
the English language, refers either to the Devil or to the planet Venus
when appearing as the morning star.
Just like the Venus, associated with Lucifer, and even called Lucifer when appearing as morning star, The Lucifer will at some point not the morningstar anymore, not Lucifer, Satan that was Lucifer and then fell.
Same as the Pentagram, which gets drawn with the Earth and Venus, can be a symbol of protection (when pointing up) or of evil (when pointing down) having the same symbolism behind it as the planet Venus and Lucifer/Satan has
The 2 (Venus and Saturn) being connected (via Lucifer-Satan) gives also then some connections to the bull symbolism of moloch when he ruled possibly back then still as lucifer and thus is the golden calf as Venus is the planet that rules over Taurus
Also relating to this is Prometheus who brought the fire (knowledge) and because of this Pandora (a woman like Eve) unleashed all the Evil (Sin)
An american north eastern native tribe to fits this storyline
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iroquois_mythology#Djodi%27kwado'
>Djodi'kwado'
was a horned serpent who inhabited the depths of rivers and lakes. He
was capable of taking on the form of a man and seducing young women. He
features prominently in the tales "The Horned Serpent Runs Away with a
Young Wife who is Rescued by the Thunderer"[5]:218–222 and "Thunder
Destroys Horned Snake".[6]
>He was attacked and may have been killed by Hé-no.[5]:223–227
Hé-no is the spirit of thunder, basically the serpent, satan seducing eve and later being btfod by michael/jupiter
Also
>In "The Great Serpent and the Young Wife" he appears as a helpful being, although his help proves less than useful
"trying
to help", either lying and deceiving fitting the narrative of the
serpent in Eden and Satan in general, or meaning well and being mistaken
which fits the story of the demiurge (I tend to relate to Satan)
Also the moral of the story in
http://the-office.com/bedtime-story/iroquois-simplethings.htm
>And when she was old, she always told her grandchildren these words: "Be satisfied with simple things."
where
Eve was in paradise, wanted more and then got screwed over. Where in
this story the woman was well off too, but wasnt satisfied and the
desire for more got her into trouble
I must add that there seems to be a mix up/conflation between Satan and Venus, though I believe both represent the same being in different states. Venus/Lucifer was his original state. Bright (the lightbringer), close
to God and subservient (female). In his rebellion he turned away from
God, distanced himself and aligned with Saturn, posing as a
patriarch/king (male).
Some connections between Saturn and Satan.
Where
as Gods symbolism is around the Sun and light Saturn stands in Duality
to this. In example in Alchemy the Sun is Gold, perfection, whereas
Saturn is lead (base/ruin)
Saturn being the planet the furthest away from the sun still visible with the naked eye, the furthest away from God.
The 6th planet with the hexagon on its northpole forming the cube. (both satanic symbolism)
Being
in greek the embodiment of time and thus ultimately decay and death
like Satan, is the source of sin with sin causing our death/mortallity.
The 6s in its seal (pic related)
The 6s encoded in the the Seal of Solomon (6 small triangles with 60° corners) and the hexagon.
Sun
is associated with Gold (perfection and the highest) in alchemy as
Saturn is Lead (being in ruin and the lowest), polar opposites once
again
Saturn in Astrology is ruling the Karma which Buddhists say
traps us in this world just like the Sin which Satan brought, brought us
into this world
Pic related then shows clearly who their god is, Satan, this material world and their own ego.
The square in pic related, which incorporates the origin of the Masons Logo is even associated with Saturn
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_square#Europe_after_15th_century
Gabriel
Beyond this it gets even more vague and the only one I have a theory beyond this I Gabriel. Gabriel is constantly described to bring messages and revelations of God to the people. This role as messenger links him to Hermes, the messenger of the gods. Hermes is assumed to be equal to Thoth who too was a teacher of the mystics and a scribe. Contrary to Hermes, Thoth is related to the moon which traditionally Gabriels is linked too.
The Lucifer issue
In the Bible Lucifer is mentioend once in Isaiah 14 where the latin
vulgate uses the term "Lucifer" to translate the hebrew "Helel" meaning
"shining one" and seems to refer to the planet Venus as morningstar as
does the term Lucifer and Phosphorus (which is the greek term used for
"Lucifer" here in the greek septuagint).
Now people say
a) That
lucifer is Jesus due to him declaring himself to be the bright morning
star in revelations 22, but there are different morningstars,
lucifer/phosphorous/helel are specifically Venus, Revelation does use
neither of these terms in any known to me version.
2. That the Isaiah verse refers to human king being introduced with
3 On the day that the LORD gives you rest from your pain and torment, and from the hard labor into which you were forced, 4you will sing this song of contempt against the king of Babylon:
However we have for once in Psalm 82 explaining how the Sons of God, the angels and pagan gods are appointed in the divine assembly to rule over the nations and turned wicked showing that they are appointed rulers (like kings) and in Ezekiel 28 the king of Tyre is refered to as "the annointed Cherub" and how he was in Eden showing the King of Tyre is not a human, so maybe the King of Babylon isnt either.
Its also worth bringing up that Aquinas too said
In this way, therefore, between us and the highest God, it is clear that they posited four orders, namely, that of the secondary gods, that of the separate intellects, that of the heavenly souls, and that of the good or wicked demons. If all these things were true, then all these intermediate orders would be called by us “angels”, for Sacred Scripture refers to the demons themselves as angels. Footnote The souls themselves of the heavenly bodies, on the assumption that these are animated, should also be numbered among the angels, as Augustine determines in the Enchiridion
Afterword
To end this piece I want to warn you again to not fall into a polytheistic trap. Though the other deities are real beings (or some of them as we are told many idols are just figures crafted by men) God the Father is the only one who is infinite, who is uncreated and who created everything else sharing his glory with God th son (who by the way we are told is the only and first begotten of God and thus a special case amongst the heavenly beings and not to be put on the same level as them). A similar terminology being used does not make him equal to the "other" gods. Worship and glory is Gods alone though I do feel a certain repsect for the angels of the LORD who remained faithful and work in his name to aid us in our development and journey to God. But remember a third of them rebelled with Satan, and to not be deceived by the various spirits
1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2By this you will know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3and every spirit that does not confess Jesusa is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and which is already in the world at this time
For those who want to do some more reading, I really enjoyed these 2 texts and they helped me quite a bit too.
